Michael Johnstone, MD, has joined the cardiovascular medicine division of Caritas St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center (CSEMC), a Tufts University School of Medicine teaching hospital. Dr. Johnstone will serve as associate chief of Clinical Cardiology for both Caritas St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and Caritas Carney Hospital in Dorchester. He brings more than 15 years of clinical experience to the medical centers’ accredited cardiovascular division.
Dr. Johnstone comes from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he was director of the Diabetes Cardiovascular Disease Program since 2001. Previously, he served as the medical director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at the Deaconess Hospital in Boston and taught as an assistant professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Board certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine, Dr. Johnstone has a special clinical interest in general cardiology and valvular heart disease along with non-invasive imagine. He specializes in diabetic heart disease and coronary artery disease.
Dr. Johnstone completed three clinical and research fellowships in cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Montreal Heart Institute and the Montreal General Hospital in Canada. In Canada, he also completed his residency in internal medicine at Montreal General Hospital and received his medical degree from McGill University Medical School.
Dr. Johnstone has himself authored an extensive number of peer-reviewed articles and abstracts. His regional, national and international contributions consist of numerous invitations to present in grand rounds, symposiums and lectures. He has also edited a textbook on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease.
Dr. Johnstone is a fellow of the American College of Cardiologists and the American College of Physicians, as well as the American Heart Association and the American Society of Echocardiography. He is a member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.
