Volunteer Your Time

The volunteers at St. Elizabeth's are some of our most precious resources. Without them, we would find it difficult, if not impossible, to add those special touches our patients and staff appreciate. Volunteers are encouraged to use whatever skills or gifts they possess in their work in a variety of areas around the medical center, including the Gift Shop, reception desk, offices, patient care areas, hospitality, and in many other departments. There are many opportunities, either to share skills and talents, or to learn new skills.

The diverse background of our volunteers guarantees a rich social and spiritual experience for those who join our organization; volunteers are invaluable members of the St. Elizabeth family.

Important Points to Consider:

  • All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age to enter the program; junior volunteer programs for students age 14 to 17 are scheduled during the summer.  Please call Volunteer Services on 617-789-2334 to learn more.
  • The minimum requirement for volunteering is three hours a week for at least three months.
  • St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center requires that all volunteers provide documentation of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine and recent TB test results.

If you have not fulfilled these medical requirements, Volunteer Services can schedule an appointment for you with our Employee Health Service.  There is no charge for this appointment.

If you prefer, you may see your own primary care provider.  However, it is important to note that costs for the MMR vaccinations and B testing will vary among medical providers and are expensive.  Insurance plans often do not cover there tests.  These charges will be the responsibility of the new volunteer and not the responsibility of Volunteer Services or St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center.

Becoming a volunteer at St. E’s is a step-by-step process designed to ensure that all volunteers are oriented to the hospital and Volunteer Services policies.

Step One:
The first step in becoming a volunteer is to complete the online application form (use the link below).
Volunteer Application Form

Step Two:
Once Volunteer Services has received and reviewed your application, we will contact you to set up a short interview.  At that interview, we will discuss your areas of interest, your schedule, and take a look at our current openings.   IMPORTANT:  You MUST bring a photo ID to your interview.

At the interview, if both parties, the applicant and Volunteer Services, agree to move forward with your application, you will:

  • Complete a criminal and sexual offender background check form (all volunteers and staff are subject to a criminal background check and a sexual offender check)
  • Schedule your visit to Employee Health Services, if needed
  • Schedule your attendance at an orientation session
  • Determine your start date and discuss any other issues related to your volunteer service

Step Three:
Attend scheduled orientation and any other department-specific training that may be required.

We look forward to meeting with you tell you more about volunteer opportunities at St. Elizabeth’s.  Please do not hesitate to contact Volunteer Services on 617-789-2334 with any questions or comments.
